"Thanks to our good friends at hirepool - Gisborne"

KIA ORA - WELCOME

Welcome to our club site. If you're new or visiting and want to know more about us and what we do then read on.

Our sport of choice is waka ama or outrigger canoe racing. We operate from Marina Park in the heart of Gisborne City on the East Coast of the North Island of Aotearoa (NZ). Marina Park is located at the junction of the two rivers Waimata & Taruheru. They trisect the city & suburbs and form the Turanganui River at their confluence,. which then flows on out into the Pacific Ocean, about one kilometre downstream.

We're fortunate to have a mix of stillwater paddling on our rivers and open water paddling out in the ocean. We're guaranteed a paddle at least 99% of the year so if you're planning a visit, give us a call & usually we can make space for an extra paddler or two.

The highlight of our year is the Annual National Sprints held during mid summer. Our sprint season is relatively short & intense and is followed by various longer distance events around the country.

2010 NATIONAL SPRINTS, LAKE KARAPIRO

Training and conditioning has started for all divisions down at the Marina. All womens crews have first priority on Mondays and Wednesdays and the mens crews take Tuesdays and Thursdays. No fixed timetable has been set for any other days but crews are expected to work and co-operate with each other at these times. It is possible for crews to negotiate schedule changes with the appropriate Headcoaches

Heather is running special RPM and Resistance classes for paddlers at Taha Fitness on Wednesday and Friday nights. Bookings are essential otherwise you cannot be guaranteed a bike.

Important notes:

1. When using the river always be aware of and courteous to other river users.

2. Stay to the right hand side wherever practical.

New Waka

More additions were made to our waka fleet recently with the purchase of three OC1s, one OC6 Mahimahi and a Mac360 coaching boat. They were all blessed by our Kaumatua, Rex Takao and will be used for training as we close into our regional W1 trials on the 5th Dec. and the Sprint Nationals starting Tuesday 19th January 2010.

The OC1s will be used for competition only ie sprint trials and nationals and will not be used for general day to day training as there are sufficient OC1s available for this purpose.
